What is real work?

I'm an aspiring software engineer. To me, it sounds like a fancy title. But, what does the world have to be gained by the reaching of such an aspiration? Anything?

So much of our world nowadays is dependant on software, but sometimes I just can't help musing at what one must see peeking into the doorway of such space as I usually inhabit while caught in the trance of the CRT. "Are they working in there?" To them, the only perceptible signs of life might be those exhibited as my head unwilling bobs to the faint rhythm of music coming from tinny monitor speakers.

Far from answering this question, I only seek to begin to clarify, perhaps in my own muddled mind, what contributions to society might be produced from this lonely workstation.
